UQ marketing and communications news

September 2018

Research Week 2018

Research Week is just around the corner (10–14 September) and includes a variety of events, publications and activities across the week to celebrate research at UQ.

Research Week is an annual UQ-wide initiative that recognises and raises awareness of the depth, breadth and impact of quality research that UQ’s research community produces.

To promote and celebrate the great research that’s occurring right across the University, OMC has prepared a suite of digital screens, which are arranged by discipline. A Comnet email will be sent on Friday with a CloudStor link for these assets. Please display these on digital screens in your area during and after Research Week to celebrate UQ’s research community.

During Research Week, the Research Impact website will feature a daily round-up showcasing how UQ researchers are creating change in five research areas of global importance: tackling substance abuse; protecting our future food supply; working to save the Great Barrier Reef; aerospace technology for tomorrow; and transforming society through education. Promotional assets to share on social media channels will be sent via Comnet during Research Week.

A full-colour, six-page Research Impact brochure will be available from 12 September for events and other marketing purposes. Contact the OMC Publications team for copies.

The 2018 UQ Research Awards are a highlight of the week, held as a networking gala event at Customs House on Tuesday 11 September. The Awards incorporate the UQ Foundation Research Excellence Awards (UQFREAs), Partners in Industry Research Excellence Awards (PIREAs), and Excellence in Higher Degree Research Supervision Awards.

To keep up to date with activities and news throughout the week, please visit UQ eventsUQ News or follow @UQ_News on Twitter. Contact OMC for any questions about Research Week events, communications or publications.

Visit the Research Week website for more information.

2018 Open Day wrap-up

August was a massive month for UQ marketing teams, with St Lucia and Gatton campuses welcoming future students to UQ Open Day.

Attendance:

  • St Lucia Open Day, Sunday 5 August - 23,033
  • Gatton Open Day, Sunday 19 August - 2448

This year OMC worked in conjunction with ITS to develop the UQ360 app to support the Open Day events. The aim of the app was to enhance visitors’ event experience with a user-friendly, convenient information source that included comprehensive program content and interactive maps for navigating the campus.

The app was the major call to action throughout the Open Day advertising campaign, resulting in 10,585 downloads. While there were some glitches and improvements to be made, this was a very positive result for the first run of the app, and OMC is investigating the option to use the app for future events and communication.

Anyone who wishes to provide feedback on their Open Day experience can complete this survey.

Thank you once again to everyone who participated in and worked hard to support this important event. All relevant data will distributed to faculties in the coming weeks.

Carving a history – a great gift item

In 2016, the Office of Marketing and Communications produced the full-colour souvenir book Carving a history: a guide to the Great Court.

Designed as a ‘Lonely Planet’ style guidebook, with extras such as expert introductions and a fully to-scale fold-out map of the Great Court, Carving a history helps readers navigate effortlessly through the Great Court’s iconic carvings, with every carving catalogued in full glorious colour, along with photos, essays and entries documenting UQ's history.

As one of the only available retail books dedicated to UQ’s history, Carving a history is a high-quality gift option that teams can purchase for visitors, guest speakers, and event attendees. UQ units can purchase copies for less than $6 per book with no minimum quantity, making it an extremely affordable choice as well.

Email the OMC Publications team for more information.

R U OK? Day

In support of R U OK? Day, UQ staff and students are encouraged to ‘wear it yellow’ on Thursday 13 September.

Student Services are hosting a 'chill out and start a conversation' event from 11am–2pm at the Grassy Knoll, Campbell Place, where you can have a coffee, or just chill out and play some games while you chat with friends or make new ones in the spirit of active conversations.

There is a Facebook event page and a UQ event listing that Student Services would appreciate assistance sharing.

If you would like images or social media collateral to share, contact Kristopher Brown.

Never underestimate the power of asking R U OK?

Any day we notice those signs or feel that something’s not quite right, we need to trust our gut instinct, ask R U OK? and start a conversation that could change a life.

To start a conversation, just follow these four simple steps:

  1. ask R U OK?
  2. listen
  3. encourage action
  4. check in.

For extra support, conversation tips and help-seeking information, go to ruok.org.au

On Thursday 20 September from 4–8pm, Student Services are hosting a Little Asia Laneway event in the Duhig Library laneway.

The purpose of this event is to activate a new and unusual space on campus, while celebrating and showcasing Asian culture. In collaboration with P&F and UQU, the event will feature some of Brisbane's best Asian food trucks while hosting cultural workshops, performances and information for students.

The Duhig Library laneway will come to life with lights, entertainment and an Asian street food market featuring Japanese pancakes, steamed buns, Vietnamese spring rolls, Pho, an assortment of curries, Korean barbecue and more. UQU and the Confucius Institute will be hosting a number of workshops and free cultural activities, so come and get involved and learn something new! This event is free and open to all UQ students, staff, friends, family and the local community.

Student Services would appreciate assistance in spreading the word, and have social media assets available. Contact Sarah Jeffrey on 336 61493 for more information.

UQ’s masterbrand: an update on the branding refresh

Since the announcement of a refreshed brand in July, OMC has been working across many facets of the project in readiness for wider implementation from 1 October. You would have seen the brand reflected in a limited range of assets so far, such as the recent student recruitment advertising campaigns and minor updates to the UQ website. Updates about key aspects of the brand project are outlined below.

Brand guidelines

The brand guidelines are progressing well – this is a significant amount of work, and we are testing them to ensure the guidelines are as self-explanatory and robust as possible. This first release, due out in mid-September, will cover topics such as brand architecture, logo versions, the graphic device, colour palette, imagery, typography and examples of applications. After the initial release, we will continue adding to and refining the guidelines over time as required, and also to include new aspects like tone of voice, videography principles and website guidelines.

Training

The brand agency that is supporting us on this project, Principals, will be delivering two training sessions in September to the UQ marcomms network. These sessions will focus on the guidelines content and will be useful for anyone that needs to apply the brand. Meeting invites will be distributed as soon as the dates are confirmed.

Website

Small updates to the website were made to coincide with the internal launch in July – the header colour and logo were updated across most sites and the graphic device was added to the homepage. In due course, our new Head of Brand and Creative Services will review the website in more detail and work with ITS on any further changes to reflect brand.

Tone of voice

Part of the refresh will involve streamlining UQ’s tone of voice to different stakeholders and audiences in any written content we produce. Although this will be referred to in the guidelines to some extent, this is a longer piece of work that will eventually be rolled out with a separate round of training, and updates to relevant resources such as Copybank and the UQ Written Style Guide.

This is a large project that will take some time to fully implement, with roll out expected to continue into 2019. Just a reminder that you are not expected to be 100% brand compliant for 1 October – items featuring the existing logo do not need to be replaced until it is reasonable to do so.

Visit the OMC website for updates and more information.

New UQ marketing and communications leaders starting this month

You may be aware that OMC’s previous Deputy Director position has been redistributed – three new leadership roles have been established, with a whole-of-UQ remit to expand best practice capability and align our communication and marketing activities across the University to the Strategic Plan priorities.

UQ's new Deputy Director, Communication is Sandra McMullan.

Sandra's role at UQ will focus on enhancing UQ’s reputation and relationship with its many stakeholders (students, alumni, media, community, partners, government etc).

Sandra brings more than 20 years experience working in the communications industry, across media and analyst relations, executive communications, internal communications, social media, content development, government relations and issues management. For the majority of her career she has held senior leadership positions – as a Director at London corporate affairs consultancy, Ketchum and most recently as Head of Communications at IBM for Australia and NZ. In both roles, Sandra managed multidisciplinary and geographically dispersed teams within large and complex organisations. Sandra has specialised in the development and implementation of integrated communication strategies that drive positive share of voice and brand reputation. During her time at IBM she was a trusted advisor to the Managing Director and his executive leadership team and represented IBM to external stakeholders including government, clients, media, analysts and influencers. Sandra will commence at UQ on Monday 10 September with a two week previously scheduled break from 24 September to 5 October.

UQ's new Head of Brand and Creative Services is Pip McConnel-Oats.

In this newly created position, Pip will oversee UQ’s move to one masterbrand and to provide a concerted focus on the consistency and quality of our creative outputs (digital and print assets, edms, collateral, merchandise, videography, photography etc) right across the University.

With a background in graphic design, Pip has more than 20 years experience specialising in brand strategy, design and implementation for national and multi-national organisations across a diverse range of industry sectors. She is currently Executive General Manager and Creative Director at Rowland, a Brisbane-based communication, digital and creative agency, managing a team of brand strategists, designers, digital producers and writers, videographers and photographers. Prior to Rowland, Pip ran her own brand consultancy, Lumino, for a decade before merging it with Rowland to bolster their brand development capabilities. She has extensive experience across the spectrum of corporate identity management from brand strategy and development through to tactical marketing communications across multiple channels. Pip will commence on Monday 24 September.

The Deputy Director, Marketing will have a strong digital focus with responsibility for all campaign efforts. Recruitment for this position has temporarily halted until further decisions about UQ’s digital marketing strategy are finalised.

Please welcome Sandra and Pip to the team when they begin. If you have any questions, contact Chief Marketing and Communication Officer Kelly Robinson.

Three Minute Thesis 2018

The Graduate School has four 3MT events coming up in September that all staff and students are welcome to attend.

UQ Written Style Guide

The online guide to written style at UQ is an authoritative guide for staff when writing any internal or external communications and marketing materials across all print and digital media.

To ensure the guide remains current, usable and relevant, a working group of staff members from units across UQ meets regularly to discuss style issues and queries that arise in their day-to-day work.

If you are interested in joining the working group, email the Publications team – new members are encouraged.
