UQ marketing and communications news

October 2017

Message from Kelly Robinson, Executive Director of Strategic Marketing and Communications

Hi everyone

I’ve had a busy but exciting first week at UQ and feel positive about working with the team to oversee the continued evolution of UQ's brand and communications strategy.

I have had the pleasure of already meeting many of you in person, and I am planning to continue to make my way around to meet everybody in the extended marketing and communications team over the coming weeks.

As you may be aware, my role was only recently created, so naturally there has been some curiosity about the scope of my position and what my priorities will be.

When I met with the OMC team on my first day, I reassured everyone that I have not begun the job with any preconceived ideas about what I will and won't do. I stressed that my first priority is to get to know the people – both within OMC and across the broader marketing and communications teams – and to understand how UQ functions as an organisation.

The recent review highlighted that one of our major challenges is to obtain greater alignment across all of the marketing, communications and events activities that occur across the University. To this end, I look forward to meeting the teams in the wider UQ community and getting a sense of how you work with OMC and within your respective faculties, institutes and units. From this starting point, we can determine together how to best collaborate towards a clear, unified future strategy for marketing and communications at UQ.

My other priority is to develop a strategic roadmap for our function to support UQ's new Strategic Plan for 2018–2020. Over the coming months, I will be working with the USMG and other senior executives on this, and I will be looking for your contribution and insights as our future priorities become clearer.

Finally, I would like to acknowledge that many of you are seeking clarification on the direction and structure of the marketing and communications function. This is understandable given the broader changes occurring across the University. While I cannot provide that clarification right now and don't expect to be able to for a number of months, I am committed to working with you openly and transparently, and encourage you to get in touch with me to discuss any ideas or clarify any issues or questions you may have. You can reach me at any time at kelly.robinson@uq.edu.au or 0412 191 267.

I look forward to meeting you in the coming weeks.

Kelly

UQ’s Campaign to Create Change kicks off soon

EMBARGO ON CAMPAIGN ASSETS: DO NOT PUBLISH UNTIL AFTER SUNDAY 15 OCTOBER. All campaign content, including logos, messaging, videos (snippets of the campaign video are featured above), social media assets and internal documents are strictly embargoed until this date. You can find a timeline of events, asset delivery and actions required from UQ Marcomms staff here.

Not if, When. The Campaign to Create Change

UQ Advancement are pleased to announce that their major philanthropic initiative, the Campaign to Create Change, will be launched by the Vice-Chancellor at the St Lucia campus on Saturday 14 October.

Not If, When. is the official brand of the campaign, and invites us all to be the change we want to see in the world.

The campaign focuses on UQ’s positive impact on the community, rather than on the University itself. It asks current and potential donors to imagine the world they want and provides a way to achieve it – by partnering our expertise with their donations, we can accelerate the beneficial outcomes of research, scholarships, and other fantastic programs across the University.

Over the coming weeks, banners, flags and various forms of campaign collateral will appear around campuses and in the community.

With your continued support, we’re confident UQ will succeed in encouraging our alumni, donors, partners, and the general community to join with UQ to together achieve great things.

Resources for marketing and communications teams

We look forward to working with you to ensure the inaugural Campaign to Create Change is a success, and would appreciate your support and assistance to effectively integrate campaign messaging where appropriate in your communications and marketing activities.

To achieve this, UQ Advancement has created a suite of tools, templates and resources, including logos, a hero video in various lengths and formats, a PowerPoint template, social media banners, FAQ documents for front-line staff, a style guide with examples of language and photographic style, logo mock-ups, booklets and banners.

These resources will be available on the Office of Marketing and Communication (OMC) UQ Brand webpage prior to the launch.

When to rebrand with the new collateral

From Monday 16 October, please ensure you update your Faculty, Institute, School or Centre channels with the new Campaign branding. This includes social media channel banners, Vision6 banners, email signatures and any other relevant communications. Updates should be made using the assets provided on the OMC Campaign Assets page, or in accordance with the Campaign style guide outlines.

The 'giving' website of each Faculty and Centre website will also be redirected by the ITS team and no further action will be required unless otherwise advised by ITS.

Small Change – it all adds up

UQ Small Change is where it all adds up – in the blogosphere, that is. Did you know that the word blog is short for weblog?

Small Change is a portal for the tales we have to tell here at The University of Queensland, from virology experts debating zombies, to students sharing their epic African journeys, to a day in the life of a dog.

It’s a glimpse behind the scenes of UQ and its people, and we invite you to read, write and learn more about the people who contribute to our vibrant community.

A blog post can speak directly to the reader. Post authors can voice opinions and unleash their creativity. It’s a fun way to showcase aspects of UQ.

Small Change posts need a connection to UQ, but there's broad scope. Your blog post could be about your latest research, campus adventures, new appointments, interesting events or student club activities. Suggestions are always welcome.

Check out our blogger ground rules and get your name up in lights. If you have any questions, contact UQ Communications via communications@uq.edu.au or on 334 60561.

QTAC direct mail campaign

Each October, OMC coordinates a QTAC direct mail campaign targeting Year 12 students who have listed a UQ program among their top three QTAC preferences for study commencing Semester 1 the following year. The campaign aims to reassure those that have listed UQ as a first preference that they have made the right decision, and encourage those that have listed UQ as a second or third preference to reconsider UQ as their preferred place of study.

This year’s campaign is in development with Ogilvy and will include a mix of communications, including direct mail, EDM and SMS. We anticipate being in market from the week commencing 16 October.

The full campaign summary will be distributed via Comnet once creative is finalised and relevant approvals have been obtained from QTAC.

An important note regarding QTAC: unlike previous years, there is no ‘on-time’ application date for Year 12 QTAC applicants this year. The due date for school leavers to apply and submit documents for the 16 January major offer round is 8 December 2017.

Faculty of Medicine campaign is a MayneStream success

The Faculty of Medicine showcased the stories of seven early career researchers (ECRs) in their recent Research Week campaign. The campaign ran from 8–16 September, and aimed to highlight that research is as much about the people as it is about the work that they do.

To achieve this, a series of videos and multimedia feature articles were crafted to show how researchers juggle work with life outside of UQ, and share what inspired them to pursue a career in research.

“Our early career researchers play a major role in our Faculty and for Research Week 2017, we’re sharing the stories of seven young researchers who are making an impact in their chosen field,” says Professor Liz Eakin, Associate Dean (Research).

“I encourage all staff to take a moment this week to celebrate the outstanding work our researchers are doing across our Faculty and I hope you enjoy their stories as much as I did.”

The videos and accompanying Shorthand stories were displayed via the MayneStream content hub and were promoted to targeted audiences on Facebook. This focused, week-long campaign saw impressive results, and the UQ Medicine – Research Facebook page saw:

• Reach increase by 268 per cent (32,894)
• Page likes increase by 165 per cent (82 new likes)
• Post engagement increase by 915 per cent (4790)
• Page views increase by 208 per cent (117)
• Followers increase by 163 percent (84)
• Total video views increase by 606 per cent (28,097).

The Research Week videos received 38,000 views across the week, ensuring the Faculty’s video views are on track to hit one million views for 2017.

View the campaign via the MayneStream content hub, or send any questions or feedback to Kirsten Dodd, Marketing and Communications Manager, Faculty of Medicine.

Time for teachers to learn

Teaching and Learning Week is just around the corner, running from Monday 30 October to Friday 3 November. This annual week of workshop, panel and showcase events is a UQ-wide collaboration dedicated to sharing and celebrating the best and newest in teaching and learning programs.

Supported by the Office of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) and The Institute for Teaching and Learning Innovation (ITaLI), the program this year highlights a variety of excellent work contributing to the Student Strategy.

To open the week, UQ welcomes Professor Richard Buckland from the University of New South Wales who promises to deliver an intriguing, insightful and humorous keynote on the best way to teach.

Following this, star student speakers from each Faculty will discuss how UQ teachers (through their teaching) have helped them find their passions in learning and life.

Other highlights of the week include three showcase events. Staff are invited to hear from multiple teams on how their projects are contributing to an enhanced student experience, and pick up some tips to adapt tools or techniques to their own courses.

€• Employability at UQ: aligning activities to the UQ Employability framework – Tuesday 31 October from 2–5pm. Register here

• The best of online, active and innovative teaching tools and pedagogy – Thursday 2 November from 2–5pm. Register here.

• Students as Partners at UQ – Friday 3 November from
2–5pm. Register here.

The full program of events and links to register can be found on the Teaching and Learning Week website.

Did you know?

Islam is the name of the religion. Islamic is the adjective describing anything connected to that religion (think: Islamic teachings, Islamic holidays).

Islamist describes people or groups who think Islam should be incorporated into politics.

That can include radical groups like ISIS that use violence to push their own extreme interpretations of Islam.

This is why saying 'Islamic terrorism' is seen as offensive.

If you have a grammar gripe or fun word-fact for us to feature in the next edition, send it to the OMC Publications team at publications@uq.edu.au.

UQ Written Style Guide

The online guide to written style at UQ is an authoritative guide for staff when writing any internal or external communications and marketing materials across all print and digital media.

To ensure the guide remains current, usable and relevant, a working group of staff members from units across UQ meets regularly to discuss style issues and queries that arise in their day-to-day work.

If you are interested in joining the working group, email the Publications team – new members are encouraged.
