June 2017

Latest edition of Contact out now

The Winter 2017 edition of Contact magazine has been released this week. Read about recent MBA graduate and war hero Ben Roberts-Smith VC and how he overcame the struggles of transitioning into civilian life; get to know the Editor-in-Chief at Frankie Press, Jo Walker, and find out how her publication is bucking the trend in the challenging world of print media; and catch up with Wallabies skipper and former UQ rugby star Stephen Moore on his return to Brisbane.

The printed magazine has recently been redesigned with an improved focus on the reader’s experience, while the website is available in an easy-to-read Shorthand format, including exclusive online content, videos, and photo galleries. Contact is also available as an app for mobile devices.

To order copies or boxes of the magazine, or get promotional copy and images for your communications channels, please email publications@uq.edu.au.

New UQ Corporate PowerPoint now available

OMC has developed a standard Corporate PowerPoint template for UQ staff, which is populated with up-to-date, general information about the University. This presentation, which requires a UQ login to access, includes information on UQ’s key learning, discovery and engagement activities, as well as general information about our locations, key information and statistics, and rankings.

Staff can use this as a starting point to provide a snapshot of UQ to external audiences, and are welcome to remove or add slides to suit their presentation needs.

The Corporate PowerPoint will be updated regularly on the OMC website to capture any changes to rankings and statistics. If you have any questions or feedback, contact Corporate Publications Manager Camille Layt (336 52479).

Media releases made easy

The OMC Communications team has introduced a media release step-by-step template to help take the pain out of writing a media release. The new template is supported by our UQ Media Release Style Guide.

Don’t forget to ensure all releases sent to OMC have a cover sheet, and that you have followed our file-name conventions to ensure we don’t lose your material in our systems. These resources are designed to ensure a quick and easy process for editing and distributing releases.

All guides are available here. Email OMC Communications with any questions.

The state of science and media reporting

The turmoil engulfing science reporting and the media more broadly, both in Australia and abroad, were the focus of Australian Science Media Centre (AusSMC) CEO Dr Susannah Eliott’s address to the Queensland Science Communicators Network last week.

Dr Eliott, presenting via Skype from Adelaide, addressed network members at an event hosted by UQ’s Queensland Brain Institute.

Dr Eliott is the ideal person to speak about science and the media. She has a PhD in cell biology from Macquarie University, a Graduate Diploma in Journalism, and more than 18 years’ experience in science communication. She spent five years as Communications Director for the International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme in Stockholm, and helped establish the AusSMC in 2005.

You can view the text of Dr Eliott’s address here (log in with your staff ID).

UQ Social Media Volunteers team

OMC Marketing have recently recruited seven current students to join our social media volunteers team. This pilot program is designed to integrate the current student perspective into the development of social media content.

Some of the content that students are currently working on include a blog post about preparing for graduations, an Instagram story about the best study spots on campus and a live stream of an overnight study session. They will also work on blog articles, Instagram and Snapchat stories and Facebook Live videos.

If you would like any advice on setting up a similar program, please don’t hesitate to contact marketing@uq.edu.au
