UQ marketing and communications news

August 2018

UQ Open Day

St Lucia Open Day is on this Sunday 5 August from 9am–3pm. UQ Open Day is the perfect opportunity for future students to see uni life from every angle and a great event to showcase everything we love about UQ.

All staff are encouraged to come along and show their support for this all ages event. If you are working at Open Day this Sunday, make sure you download the UQ360 Open Day app and familiarise yourself with the functionality and features available.

The Gatton Open Day will be held on Sunday 19 August from 9am–3pm.

Latest edition of ChangeMakers out now

The 2018 edition of ChangeMakers magazine was released in mid-July.

ChangeMakers is UQ’s industry-focused magazine, and shares inspiring and thought-provoking stories about UQ’s teaching, research, partnerships and alumni community.

In this issue:

ChangeMakers is distributed domestically and internationally to subscribers and leads from faculties and institutes. If you would like to order copies or boxes of the magazine (limits apply), please email changemakers@uq.edu.au.

Don’t forget that the ChangeMakers masthead also extends to the podcast series that is wrapping up soon.

Latest podcasts include passionate alumnus Lara Nobel, who is advocating for sustainability and community-building through her Tiny House Company, and UQ marathon man Professor Mark Cooper, who is finding solutions to food-gap issues in his day job and conquering the world’s toughest foot races in his spare time.

We encourage you to listen, rate, subscribe, and tell your networks about the series.

QBI 15-year anniversary dinner

In 2018, QBI is celebrating 15 years of life-changing discoveries to improve human health, innovate, and further our understanding of the brain.

An anniversary event will be held in The Long Room at Customs House on Saturday 20 October. It is a black-tie event featuring a formal five-course degustation dinner, with a wine-paired menu designed by signature chef Philip Johnson.

The evening will also include a musical program by the Queensland Symphony Orchestra and all funds raised will go to QBI brain research.

Visit the QBI website to purchase tickets or learn more.

2018 Winter Sleepout

On Tuesday 14 August, students, staff and leaders within Brisbane’s design community will sleep without shelter on one of the coldest nights of the year to help change the lives of South East Queensland women at risk of homelessness.

Aiming for a record $25,000 in fundraising, UQ's School of Architecture is hoping to not only raise awareness but also much-needed funds to help break the cycle of homelessness and poverty in Brisbane.

Funds from the 2018 Winter Sleepout will support a new initiative developed by Second Chance Programme and Churches of Christ to support young women transitioning from state care that will allow them to establish stable and secure homes.

Visit the Architecture website for more information, and to support the staff and students sleeping out.

Fix ya pix

UQ has a 'huge' problem. And it's got to do with the size of images that are being uploaded to UQ websites across all organisational areas.

UQ Drupal sites have an upload limit of 20 mega pixels, however there is rarely any reason for an image of this size to be uploaded.

Images online don't have to have the same resolution as images for print. Print resolution should be 300dpi, but that can be reduced to 72dpi for images on websites, and still be clear enough for screens.

So if you have downloaded images from iStock or similar, received images from a professional photographer or downloaded images from UQ Images, chances are those images will be larger than needed.

Sites like compressjpg.com are free and can quickly compress a whole folder of photos at once.

The web publishing website has handy guidelines around image size, naming conventions and file management.

UQ 2018 NAIDOC Music Culture Art Festival

Don't forget that the UQ NAIDOC Music Culture Art Festival is on from 3pm–9pm today at the St Lucia campus.

All staff, students and community are invited to this free, all-ages event, celebrating this year’s theme, “Because of her, we can”.

Heading up the music line-up is Yolngu hip hop sensation Baker Boy, with Tia Gostelow and Benny Walker, along with talented Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander performers, artists, dancers and 98.9FM Wild Black Women.

Food trucks, arts, crafts and much more will available on the lawns and Art Museum.

Read more about the festival, and register for your free tickets.

Queensland Parliament is sitting 1–2 and 21–23 August. Federal Parliament is sitting 13–16 and 20–23 August. Parliament sucks up media oxygen, which is worth considering before issuing media releases in sitting weeks.

A range of events across Queensland is detailed at  Events Queensland and  Our Community. Check the calendar of internal  UQ events here.

Please advise  communications@uq.edu.au of any dates or events you think should be added to the next monthly calendar.

UQ Written Style Guide

The online guide to written style at UQ is an authoritative guide for staff when writing any internal or external communications and marketing materials across all print and digital media.

To ensure the guide remains current, usable and relevant, a  working group of staff members from units across UQ meets regularly to discuss style issues and queries that arise in their day-to-day work.

If you are interested in joining the working group, email the  Publications team – new members are encouraged.
